Embracing Fatherhood: Inspired by Baba Peter's Journey

Greetings Ubuntu Life Family,

My name is Andrew, and I recently embarked on the incredible journey of fatherhood. Just a few weeks ago, I held my daughter for the first time, and in that moment, a new part of my heart was revealed—one that I didn’t fully know existed. Though she’s only a month old, my sense of purpose has already begun to shift in profound ways.

Right now, fatherhood isn’t about big decisions; it’s about the quiet moments. Naps on my chest, staring at her while she sleeps, trying to decode every new sound she makes. There’s so much I don’t know yet. But what I do know is this: I want to be her safe place, her guide, and someone who shows up consistently, wholeheartedly, even when it’s hard. That desire to be present has taken on even deeper meaning after watching the story of Baba Peter and his son, Peter Kariuki.

After losing his wife, Baba Peter became a full-time caregiver to his son, who lives with cerebral palsy. Watching that video reminded me that fatherhood isn’t defined by perfection. It’s defined by presence, sacrifice, and love that doesn’t flinch when life gets tough. Baba Peter didn’t choose an easy road, but he chose to show up fully, and that’s the kind of father I want to become.

Even now, in this very early chapter, I feel the weight and honor of that responsibility. I may not know yet what kind of school she’ll attend or how I’ll handle her first heartbreak, but I do know this: she will grow up knowing that her dad is there. Not just with resources, but with presence. With patience. With unconditional love. Stories like Baba Peter’s are a grounding reminder of the kind of man I hope to be, not just in the proud, easy moments, but in the hard and hidden ones, too.
