Brenda joined the Ubuntu Life Foundation team three years ago as a special education teacher. Today she coordinates and runs the school program. She has seen a lot of growth and changes at the Ubuntu Special Needs Centre over the past few years, but the most impactful has been the move to the Children's Wellness Center (CWC). We asked Brenda in what ways the move to the CWC has impacted the school program.
Brenda on moving day
Moving into our new building has given us more space for physical, efficient, and safe play, which is a key part of the learning process for our kids. For the first time, we have a functional playground right next to the classrooms. Our kids can't get enough of the trampoline!
The new Centre provides these physical benefits and dramatically improves mental well-being as classes are no longer crowded and stuffy, which fosters a stimulating environment for the kids to enjoy learning.
With more classroom space at the Centre, we have room to expand our school program. We have already enrolled 12 new kids in the school program bringing our total number to 60.
For many years, we have wanted to expand our vocational training programs for kids that age out of our school program, and now we have the space to do that. We'll soon be offering farming and animal-rearing courses.
We feel so lucky to have Brenda as part of the Foundation's team of amazing teachers and caregivers. Brenda says she joined Ubuntu Life because she wanted to foster growth for her community - we can confidently say she has!
