Reflections from East Hampton: An Interview with Amal Wilemon

This summer, Ubuntu Life made its mark on the East Coast with a vibrant pop-up presence in Sag Harbor and East Hampton. But for Amal Wilemon, our Chief Creative Officer and co-founder, this trip wasn’t just about retail—it was a deeply personal return to a place she once called home.

“I lived in NYC from 2002–2012 and have incredible memories from my time here,” Amal shared. “So there was a lot to revisit and a lot to share.”

After three successful seasons in Aspen, Amal and her husband Zane, who also co-founded Ubuntu Life, decided it was time to bring their bold, meaningful brand to the Hamptons. With curated collections crafted in Kenya and designed especially for the pop-up experience, they were excited to see how the community would respond.

A Community That Showed Up With Big Love

Two standout moments defined the trip. First, a collaboration with Love Shack Fancy over Fourth of July weekend where Ubuntu Life’s “HAMPTONS” beaded hats flew off the shelves. Bracelets and dog collars, also beaded by women artisans in Kenya, quickly became crowd favorites.

“LSF loved the response so much, they invited us to host a Dog Rescue event at their Charlotte store this fall,” Amal said.

The second memorable moment? A more intimate gathering at a private residence—an evening where stories were shared, laughter flowed, and customers became true friends of the brand.

Behind the Scenes: Pop-Up Life Isn’t Always Glamorous

What many may not see is the effort it takes to pull off a pop-up tour. Each product is shipped directly from Kenya, often made as limited-edition pieces that will never be sold again. Amal credits her assistant, Ellie, for making the magic happen on the ground.

“Creating a mini storefront in multiple locations over two weeks is no joke,” Amal said. “I couldn’t do it without her.”

What’s Next for Ubuntu Life?

The success of the Hamptons experience has sparked big ideas for next year—including securing a dedicated storefront to create an immersive Ubuntu experience.

“Ubuntu is more than just products,” Amal explained. “It’s a lifestyle. When you walk in, you feel it. It’s like a warm hug you can’t get enough of.”

For now, the team’s focus shifts to preparing for the Holiday and Valentine’s Day seasons, as well as the Ubuntu Life Foundation Gala in November. But one thing’s for sure—Ubuntu Life will be back in the Hamptons next summer, bigger and more inspired than ever.
