UBUNTU School operates from the conviction that a child with special needs or severe disabilities can lead a life of abundance.
Why special needs education?
When we first came to Maai Mahiu, we found a community of children with special needs and their mothers being mistreated and secluded. UBUNTU School was created to combat stigma and injustice by providing therapy, education, and vocational training to youth with special needs in Maai Mahiu.
UBUNTU School partners with The Acacia Fund, a group of individuals and medical professionals committed to long-term investment in the students, educators, therapists, and community needs.
PIZZA FESTIVAL: On February 13th, Kelvin Chege (UBUNTU School Program Manager), Elizabeth Kanuri (UBUNTU School Program Assistant), & the Kenya Team threw a Pizza Festival (YUM!) at UBUNTU Café in Maai Mahiu to celebrate our UBUNTU Kids (Malaika Kids) and to raise money for the purchase of therapy equipment and assistive devices for the UBUNTU School. In true UBUNTU fashion, we brought out the kid in everyone with bounce castles, trampolines, entertainers, games, and face painting.
Our Kenya Team worked hard to put this event together with Kenyan & US sponsors: Superior Hotels Kenya, Acacia Fund, Bundu Rovers Club, All Star DJs, SEP, Skeltek, Sarakasi Trust 'Smiles for Change' and Brown's Cheese.
ACACIA EVENT: The Acacia Fund's 5th Annual event in Kansas City was held on October 17th. Their goal was to build a beautiful new Special Needs School to support all of the students therapies and learning needs, as well as provide room for more students as many are waiting on a list. There was a live and silent auction, dinner, open bar, and plenty of entertainment!
